Skylights (Window in the Roof)

A skylight, also known as a roof window, is a specialized glass or polycarbonate opening installed directly into a building’s roof to introduce natural daylight and improve indoor brightness. Unlike conventional vertical windows, skylights receive direct sunlight from above, allowing them to provide significantly more natural illumination for dark rooms, corridors, top-floor areas, residential spaces, and commercial buildings. They are commonly used in modern homes, sloped roof structures, offices, and industrial facilities across Pakistan. Skylights are available in different configurations, including fixed skylights, which are permanently sealed glass units designed to maximize daylight with minimal maintenance and excellent weather protection. Ventilating skylights feature manual or motorized opening mechanisms that allow fresh air circulation, helping remove trapped heat, moisture, and odors from kitchens, bathrooms, and upper-floor rooms. Polycarbonate dome skylights use lightweight, impact-resistant curved panels and are widely preferred for warehouses, factories, and large roof areas due to their durability and cost efficiency. For Pakistan’s hot climate, proper glass selection is essential to prevent excessive heat gain. Modern skylights should use double-glazed insulated glass units (IGUs) with an air gap between two glass panes to improve thermal performance. Laminated safety glass is recommended for the inner layer to hold broken glass together and enhance occupant safety. Additional options such as Low-E coatings or reflective glass treatments help reduce solar heat, control UV radiation, and improve energy efficiency, making skylights a practical and elegant solution for bringing natural light into indoor environments while maintaining comfort.
