A hammer drill machine, commonly known as an impact drill, is a versatile power tool designed for drilling into materials such as wood, metal, brick, mortar, and light concrete. Unlike an SDS rotary hammer that uses a pneumatic piston mechanism, a hammer drill generates impact action through mechanical discs that create rapid striking movements while drilling. It is widely used for masonry drilling to install wall plugs, electrical fittings, shelves, and brackets, as well as for smooth rotary drilling in wood, plastic, and metal when the hammer function is disabled. Many models feature a mode selector switch that allows users to switch between hammer drilling, standard drilling, and screwdriving functions. Available with keyed or keyless chucks, hammer drills provide secure bit holding or quick bit changes depending on the application. Variable speed control and reverse functions improve precision and make it easier to remove stuck bits or tighten and remove screws. While hammer drills are ideal for light to medium-duty masonry work, SDS rotary hammers are better suited for heavy concrete drilling and demolition applications.
