Description

A butt hinge is one of the oldest and most commonly used mechanical hinge systems, consisting of two matching metal plates (leaves) connected by a central pin that allows doors, windows, and cabinets to open and close smoothly. One leaf is fixed to the stationary frame or door jamb, while the other leaf is attached to the moving door or window sash. When the door is closed, the hinge remains mostly hidden except for the central knuckle and pin section. Butt hinges are available in various materials, with stainless steel (SS 304/SS 316) being a premium choice due to its excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and suitability for residential and commercial applications. Solid brass hinges provide a traditional appearance, smooth operation, and natural rust resistance, making them ideal for luxury wooden doors, while mild steel (MS) hinges offer an economical solution for interior applications when properly coated against corrosion. Common variations include ball bearing butt hinges, which use small internal bearings to reduce friction and support heavy doors such as solid wood entrances and large window panels; loose pin hinges, which allow the door to be removed easily by lifting it off after removing the pin; fixed pin security hinges, designed for outward-opening doors to prevent unauthorized hinge removal; and rising butt hinges, which slightly lift the door during opening to prevent contact with thick carpets or uneven flooring. Butt hinges remain a reliable choice for doors, windows, and furniture due to their durability, load-bearing capability, and simple installation.
